Lesson #5:

How many times have you put on your eye makeup in the morning, only to find that mid day your mascara has smudged under your eye and your eye shadow has creased in your lid?  Here are some fool proof tips for getting beautiful eye makeup that lasts all day without smudging or creasing.

  1. Place concealer on the lid and blend with a concealer brush.  This erases any discoloration on the lid creates a blank “canvas” from which you can work from.
  2. Blend translucent powder through the crease and on the lid using a qtip.  This way your eye shadow doesn’t settle into the fine lines of the crease.
  3. To prevent smudging on the bottom lashline, create a barrier on the lashline with translucent powder.
  4. Don’t blend your eye shadow over your lid.  Rather, you should place the shadow first, then blend.  You won’t get the messy shadow dropping on your face.
  5. To set your mascara, use a clean, dry mascara wand with a little black eye shadow.  By putting powder over your mascara, you won’t have the mascara running or smudging on your face!

Lesson #4:

CONCEALER:  LIGHTNESS PULLS FEATURES FORWARD

Create a “triangle of light” under the eye, to open up the face and draw attention to focus features.  It’s an old trick used by makeup artists for photography…  Why not use on everyone??  It’s not just for models any longer!

MATTE BRONZER:  THE PERFECT WAY TO THIN THE FACE AND CREATE CHEEKBONES

The best way to “pop” your cheekbones is the apply a matte bronzer right underneath the cheekbones.  Use a fan brush, it takes all the guesswork out of application!

SHIMMERY HIGHLIGHT POWDER:  LIGHT REFLECTS OFF THE TOPS OF CHEEKS

Apply a shimmer powder or gel on the high points of the face.  The light bounces off the tops of your cheeks and creates a beautiful glow that lights up your face!

Makeup Tutorials on eHow – How to Cover BlackHeads and Acne

Lesson #3:

How to Cover Blackheads and Acne Scars with Makeup

This is a common concern for many women…  The problem is that covering the imperfections is the easy part!  The tricky part is to get your skin looking smooth and even in tone.

Get the Tools Right!

  • Make sure you use a nice and thick creamy concealer.  Liquid is great for under eye circles, but you need a cream to cover dent or bumps.
  • Get a good concealer brush.  I prefer a large, flat one with synthetic bristles.
  • Use a powder that is translucent, not lighter than your skin tone.  If it is too light, you will actually draw attention to what you are trying to cover!

Cover the Way the Pros Do!

  • Press the concealer into the dent, bump, redness, blackheads until the are completely covered.
  • Use the concealer brush to “feather” out the edges.
  • Dab your clean fingertip over the top to remove excess concealer.
  • Set with translucent powder.

Makeup Tutorials on eHow – How to Do Your Makeup Quickly

Lesson #2:

How to Do Your Makeup Quickly in the Morning

Most women don’t want to spend a lot of time in the morning to do their makeup – and who can blame them!  Learn a streamlined approach to getting gorgeous in 10 minutes or less.

Focus on the Skin

Use a primer to smooth out the surface of the skin and to build a barrier between your skin and your foundation.

Apply a Tinted Moisturizer with your fingertips to even out your complexion.  Focus on the center of the face, where women experience most of their skin concerns.

Use a creamy concealer to cover your dark circles and hide any imperfections.  Remember – a concealer brush is key to avoiding those “raccoon eyes”!

Give Your Skin a Boost of Color

Apply a peach or pink shade of blush on the apples of the cheeks.  I love using a fan brush for this, it makes application SO easy!

You can even use your blush on your eyes!  Just sweep a little color across your lids with the fan brush.

Play Up Your Eyes and Lips

Use a thickening mascara to enhance your eyes and build up your lashline.  The more the better!  Then you look like you’re wearing eyeliner – but you’re not!

Choose a natural looking lip gloss, lip stain, or lip balm.  It’s up to you!

Summertime Makeup Tips

What’s the best way to look cool in the summer heat?  The team of Beauty Buzz 90210 is here to give you the best tips for keeping cool when things heat up.

1.  Keep cool with hydrating mists.

While powder can look cakey and messy, a setting spray will set your makeup AND keep you cool in the summer heat.  You can keep a small spray bottle of filtered water in your purse to use as an all over misting cool down.

2.  Use a cosmetic puff to touch up or remove perspiration.

A professional cosmetic puff is the perfect tool for looking fresh!  Fill it up with oil-absorbing powder to remove shine, and you can store it in your beach bag for an instant touch up.  Even if you don’t fill it with powder, it can be used to remove perspiration by simple rolling it across your skin.  It instantly removes any oil or impurities by absorbing into puff, without removing your makeup!

3.  Use makeup wipes to keep “cool”.

A nice way to freshen up is by using a wipe to cool down the inner wrists, back of the neck, and behind the knees…  while keeping the area super clean and sweat free.

4.  Oil blotting papers keep skin looking fresh.

This is a great tip for anyone – especially men!  Blotting papers can be used to remove oil and sweat from the face.  I give these to my male clients to carry in their briefcases, to use prior to meetings, interviews, etc.  It works great because even though there is usually a very small amount of powder on the paper, it doesn’t look like makeup at all!!

I get asked all the time about the best way to become a professional makeup artist.  I am here to answer all of these questions for you!  It’s so hard to decide the right path to take when you are doing your research…  I’ve broken it down for you in a few easy steps.

Melissa McNamara Makeup School

Do I need to pay thousands of dollars to attend a big school?

It depends on what your goal is.  If you want to enroll in a full time, long term commitment education, then this might be the right choice for you.  I always say that for some students, this is a good choice.  If you are looking to hang out with a lot of students, work on projects in a school setting, and take your time to learn, and money isn’t a roadblock, consider this option.

If you are on a budget, and want to get working immediately, there are other options.  This is why I created a short term, focused program for those students that want to learn while doing from a working professional.  Learn more about my makeup artistry training.

What should I look for when choosing a school?

Beautiful Outlook Makeup Training

#1  Are your instructors ACTIVELY working in the industry?

This is KEY to your education.  I happen to know of some instructors that have been teaching the SAME curriculum for 20+ years!!  Plus, they haven’t worked in the industry for just as long!  Products, social media,  job booking, techniques…  These things are changing all the time, and you need to be instructed by someone that can really teach you the “ins and outs” of the industry.

#2 Get references from ACTUAL students.

Ask the school for references from students, but more importantly, do some research online.  Look on google, yelp, etc. to see what people are saying.  I found an extremely helpful blog that talks all about the different options where actual students weigh in on the pros and cons of each option.  Click here to learn more.

#3 Make sure you’re not being conned into buying a kit with crappy makeup.

Sorry, but it’s true.  So many schools REQUIRE that you spend an exorbitant amount on a kit full of makeup that they make money on.  NOT NECESSARY!  You can get a kit with all you need to get started for under $300!!  Don’t be fooled by imitations, they just want to make money off of you!

Do I need a cosmetology license?

Not if you plan on working in film, print, runway, photography, tv, retail or weddings.  The only time you need a license is if you want to work in a salon or spa environment.  In fact, I have a lot of students that attend my training that are in aestheticians school, because they inadequate makeup training!!

Contact me if you want more information regarding my makeup school.  Most of my students are assisting me on the job and working within 2 weeks.  If this sounds like something you want to do, I’d love to meet you!

Airbrush Tanning in Los Angeles

Categories: Makeovers, Makeup at Work, Male Grooming, Skincare, Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

It’s official!  Summer is here and everyone wants to be bronzed and beautiful.  Well I’m here to tell you…  FAKE your tan people!

Los Angeles in the Summer

Fun in the Sun Los Angeles

Here’s my recipe for getting that “I just got home from a vacation in Maui” look…

  • Start with clean skin the night before.  Mix a drop of self-tanner into your night cream.  Apply to face, neck and chest.  In the morning…Viola!
  •  Use a tinted moisturizer that is slightly darker to match your newly fake tanned skin.  This will make your skin look dewy and fresh!  No heavy foundation in the summer!
  • Tap a little highlighting gel on the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, and tops of brows.
  •  Select a bronzer that’s not too orange, you don’t want to look like an Oompa Loompa!!!  I prefer one that has a little shimmer, and blocks of different shades of bronze, like the classic Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer.
  •  I love to use a fan brush to apply the bronzer.  That way you get a feather light application without streaking.
  • Beginning at the temples, apply the bronzer by creating an arc over the cheekbone.  Think of it as creating a rainbow of bronzer to highlight your bone structure.
  • Bronze your hairline and forehead, over the top of the nose (where your sunglasses would hit), and the chin.  Get all the spots where the sun would naturally hit.
  •  I always finish up the look by sweeping bronzer through the crease of the eye.  It pulls the look altogether!!

Apply a little mascara and a pinky gloss, and you have a beautiful, sun kissed glow!!

My clients always ask me about eyelash extensions…  Will I like them?  Will they make my lashes fall out?  What happens if I want to take them out?

Lucky for me, my BFF Billy Lowe is an expert in this matter!  Here’s what I can tell you.  It really DOES matter who you go to.  Get references, ask to see their work, etc.  If it is done by a true professional, that has the proper training and certification, you will absolutely LOVE the results!!

Forget all those chemical products that promise to make your lashes grow over time, and MAY alter the color of your eyes! (Yes, it’s true, I’ve seen happen!)  Billy is the real deal, and you’re sure to love the long, luscious lashes you get as a result of his fine work.

Now I know all about it, and you can too!  If you want to read all about eyelash extensions, check out Beauty Buzz 90210!!

The Perfect Smoky Eye – Beauty Tutorial

Categories: Makeovers, Smoky Eye Shadow, Wedding Makeup, Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

“How do I get a smoky eye?”  That’s probably one of the most frequently asked question I get.  I’m going to let you in on a little secret…There’s a big misconception out there.  A lot of the time, people use the term “smoky eye” to describe the color they are trying to achieve, like charcoal gray.  In reality, the term “smoky eye” refers to a technique, not a color.

Here are some basics to follow:

  • Choose a wash color, a dark color, and a medium pop of color.
  • The darkest shade should encircle the entire eye, closest to the lash line.  Don’t forget the inner rim!  That’s the secret for getting a true smoky eye!
  • Use the medium shade in the crease to blend the dark shade and the wash color together.
  • Thicken the lashes with loads of mascara or false lashes.
